Comment on New York Times editorial on Gaza on 12-30-08

Hamas is an outpost of Iran in this part of the world. Israel has certainly made many mistakes in dealing with the Palestinians and the Arab world, however the rocket terror of Hamas is not a response to any of them. It started three years ago immediately after Israel abandoned the Gaza strip. It is difficult to see any advantage it brings to Palestinians in Gaza. Hamas under the leadership of Iran acts first of all against Egypt, Jordan, Palestinian Authority and many other Arab states. The Israeli invasion is a threat against Iran and because of that may result in an opportunity for relatively stable cease fire. The Iran government, in spite of its antisemitic rhetoric and sponsoring of terror, could be practical too.

Israel should decide if it is capable to remove Hamas from power and to cause emergence of more moderate administration or to try and reach an agreement with the present power.
It is difficult to see the logic in the actions of Hamas, assuming it acts in the interest of Palestinians. It rather seems,as Egypt claims, that Hamas is guided by Iranians interests, which have nothing with Palestinians. In any event if Israel desires an agreement it should speak with its enemies, Hamas or Teheran or both.
