If a scientist had made an eloquent and moving speech about his intent to find a cure for cancer, his peers never would have considered him for Nobel or for that matter for any other prize. Similarly a promise by potential writer of a “great” book, would hardly qualify for prize candidacy. The Nobel Peace Prize Committee acted politically. Putting aside the issue of morality of purely political considerations, the problem is that the results of such actions are very hard to predict. The supporters of Mr. Obama will applaud; his detractors both on the left and the right will consider the Peace Prize another layer on virtual structure of public relations and marketing genius of his strategists, which does nothing to show anything about the core values of the President.
