According to Mr. Cohen, President Obama should continue the policy of Mr. Bush, who by conquest of Iraq and by having a Shia Government there, increased the power of Iran. Continuing of this policy, rather inexplicably, changes the status quo. Leaving Israel aside, the fears of Saudi Arabia and Egypt Mr. Cohen writes, are exaggerated.
What is relevant is not changing status quo or keeping it but serving American interests best. In the eyes of Iran, détente will lead to a positive outcome only if practically it allows Iran to have nuclear arms so that it could pursue its imperialist dreams. In short term this means immediate change of status quo between Sunni and Shia in Iraq, resuming civil war there and neither sending US troops home nor to Afghanistan-Pakistan theater. Any threat to the stability of Saudi Arabia will also threaten the US and the world oil supply. To avoid the danger both Saudi Arabia and Egypt will immediately accelerate their efforts to attain nuclear arms.
President Obama is willing to sacrifice Israel for the sake of changing the status quo; but contrary to the opinion of leaders of Israel, Iran is not an immediate threat to their country. However, if Israel is in real and immediate danger, it will bomb Iran, without asking for permission from anybody. Administrations knows that and therefore the Head of CIA visited Israel few days ago. His Israeli counterpart is an ardent supporter of bombing Iran now.
It is hard to see how all this serves American interests.
