Failure of Republicans seems now self evident. Unfortunately the media supported the administration during most of the two terms.
Right now, the American people are more troubled by the economy in the US and other parts of the world, where Bush, Cheney and Gonzales had nothing to say. It is not yet clear what the causes of the crisis are. The world is still waiting for a new Keynes and new “General Theory.”
The country indeed expects “bold steps” by President Obama. Whether such steps entail much bigger government role is still debatable.
