As it looks now, at least in the short term, the rockets from Gaza will stop, and Hamas will not receive anymore Iranian weapons through the shaky southern border. Hamas, unable to launch rocket attacks, will become a different entity. Although Hamas was considerably weakened, its command and control was shattered, and it does not enjoy anymore absolute allegiance of the Gaza population, Israel does not want to replace it and accept responsibility for the government there. Israel took hundreds of prisoners in Gaza, it was in telephone contact with more than 100,000 Arabs warning them about forthcoming shelling to avoid civilian casualties, its intelligence services infiltrated the strip, it maintains direct and indirect communication with Hamas about the logistics of humanitarian assistance. The best outcome of the incursion both for Hamas and Israel and certainly the fastest can be achieved by direct talks between them. Israel will achieve a long term ceasefire and Hamas will continue to be in power.
